Romestead Beginner Guide: Build Your First Town

At a glance

Build a Workbench and Town Core, prepare housing, and supply Food Storage before recruiting. Citizens eat from their own town’s food storage when a new day begins.

Build a settlement that can feed its people

Start with a Workbench, craft a Town Core, and place it to establish your town. Leave room for farms and production buildings. Nearby clay is convenient, but it is not a requirement for placing the core.

Before recruiting survivors, prepare an available place to live and a food supply. A flag alone does not provide a bed. Look for survivors at camps, ruins and prisoner locations once your town has room for them.

  1. Gather Wheat and grind it into Flour at a Manual Mill.
  2. Cook Bread at a Campfire. The listed campfire recipe uses 2 Flour; a Bakery uses 1 Flour per Bread.
  3. Put food in your town’s Food Storage, rather than a worker’s personal production chest.
  4. Recruit a survivor, assign a job, and check the next morning’s food supply.

Citizens eat from Food Storage in their own town when a new day begins. One food store can serve that town. Give a hungry citizen food directly if they need help before the next morning.

If citizens stop working

Check food, job assignment and housing before expanding production. Hunger lowers efficiency and can eventually stop work. The version 0.26.2_3 citizen guide expresses this as 100% hunger → zero efficiency; do not mistake zero hunger for starvation.

Your next milestones

Goal Task or offering What it opens
Establish farming Ceres: Honoring the Soil, 20 Wheat Farmstead
Start town automation The Giant Owl; offer the Guardian’s Eye Logistics Tent, Material Storage and Carpenter’s Workshop
Advance construction Virgil’s Poem; offer Granite Tooth Brick Oven and Carpenter’s Workshop Level 2

For the Watermill, check Honoring the Craft in your quest list. The task lists Emperor’s Salad, Mushroom Skewer and 5 Bread; older tutorials show a different offering.

Continue with town logistics when carrying materials becomes your main bottleneck.
